Elisabeth Gerle serves as Associate Professor at Lund University's Centre for Theology and Religious Studies within the Faculty of Humanities and Theology. With extensive international experience including visiting scholar positions at Princeton University's Center for International Studies and Princeton Theological Seminary, as well as research periods at Stellenbosch Institutet of Advanced Study in South Africa, she maintains active scholarly engagement across multiple continents.
Her research interests span Climate Ethics, Political Theology, Scandinavian Creation Theology, Human Rights, Religion and Society, Body and Spirituality, and Democracy Studies. Her scholarly work demonstrates consistent engagement with contemporary political challenges through theological frameworks, particularly examining how Scandinavian Creation Theology can inform modern political discourse. Recent publications reveal a strong focus on climate ethics and democratic theory, with her 2023 book "Vi är inte idioter: Klimat, ekonomi, demokrati" challenging the reduction of citizens to consumers in contemporary political economy.
Gerle's publication record shows significant interdisciplinary reach, with works appearing in theology, political science, sociology, and gender studies venues. Her research output demonstrates increasing focus on the intersection of theological concepts with practical political challenges, particularly through the lens of Scandinavian Creation Theology which she has helped develop as a research field.
Professional activities extend beyond traditional academic work, with regular contributions to public discourse through Swedish National Public Radio's Philosophical Room, Dagens Nyheter, Sydsvenskan, and other media outlets. She has initiated global networks among Lutheran women called "Writing back" and collaborates with Nordic scholars on Scandinavian Creation Theology research.
Current research projects include "Skandinavisk skapelseteologi" (2019-2024) and "Polchre projektet" (2019-2024), demonstrating ongoing scholarly productivity and institutional support for her work. Previous leadership roles include Dean of the Pastoral Institute in Lund (2001-2005) and Ethicist at the Church of Sweden's Research Department.
