Dr. Yu Tian Wang is a tenured Professor in the Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine at the University of British Columbia. He holds the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon Chair in Stroke Research and is based at UBC Hospital and the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health.
His academic credentials include:
- Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Memorial University (1992)
- B.M. (Medicine), Shandong University Medical School (1982)
Dr. Wang's research investigates fundamental mechanisms of synaptic transmission and plasticity in neuronal networks, with emphasis on dysfunction in brain disorders. His work bridges molecular neuroscience and clinical applications targeting stroke, epilepsy, and cognitive deficits through mechanistic studies of neural circuitry.
His major distinctions include:
- Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. & Yukon Chair in Stroke Research
- Howard Hughes Medical Institute International Scholar (2002-2011)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (since 2006)
As principal investigator, Dr. Wang has directed substantial research programs funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Heart and Stroke Foundation. His laboratory at the Centre for Brain Health pioneers investigations into synaptic pathophysiology using advanced electrophysiological and molecular techniques to develop therapeutic interventions for neurological diseases.
