Yongdong Liu is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the UCL School of Management since 2015. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and dual bachelor's degrees in Economics and Statistics from Peking University. His research focuses on quantitative marketing, empirical industrial organization, and the economics of innovation, particularly studying mobile app platforms' competitive dynamics and intellectual property strategies. He currently advises Yiyao Zhou in their PhD studies.
His research explores topics such as freemium strategies in mobile apps, surge pricing in ride-sharing, and post-pandemic industry recovery. Methodologically, he combines machine learning and structural estimation approaches.
Yongdong has contributed to studies on collective petitioning in rural China and long-term growth projections for the Chinese insurance market. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with real-world market analysis across sectors like technology, transportation, and insurance.
