Dr. Ying Huang is an Associate Professor in Sociology and Demography at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), affiliated with the College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP). Her research focuses on urban sociology, social stratification, and population health, with a particular emphasis on neighborhood inequality, racial/ethnic health disparities, and policy interventions. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University at Albany, State University of New York, a Master of Public Policy from the University of Missouri, and a Bachelor of Laws from Southwest University of Political Science and Law.
Her work examines how socioeconomic environments and public policies influence health outcomes across populations. Key areas include the longitudinal effects of neighborhood poverty on obesity, racial disparities in opioid-related mortality, and the moderating role of co-ethnic density during economic crises. Recent grants include projects on improving urban survey methodologies, energy consumption planning, and domestic violence research, totaling over $248,000 in funding.
Dr. Huang has presented at major conferences such as the Population Association of America and the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science. Her publications appear in journals like Social Science Research, Annals of Epidemiology, and the American Journal of Health Promotion. Ongoing research explores the mediation pathways between childhood adversities and adult health outcomes through cumulative poverty experiences.
