Dr. Yi Li is a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University. Their work bridges artificial intelligence research with critical media and cultural studies, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to technology and society. Dr. Li leads research in secure AI systems through the European Lighthouse initiative and contributes to autonomous systems development via the Lancaster Intelligent, Robotic and Autonomous Systems Centre.
Research interests span three key areas: (1) technical advancements in AI including continual learning, computer vision, and cybersecurity; (2) critical media studies examining gender representation, queer theory, and digital fandom dynamics; and (3) sociocultural analyses of East Asian contexts focusing on identity politics and pandemic governance. Their work integrates machine learning innovations with qualitative cultural analysis.
Recent publications (2025) demonstrate dual focus: technical papers on deepfake detection and autonomous navigation alongside groundbreaking studies on queer archives and pandemic geopolitics. This interdisciplinary approach is reflected in affiliations with Security Lancaster's AI ethics initiatives and cultural studies networks exploring transnational media practices.
Dr. Li collaborates across global research groups including the Secure Machine Learning & Intelligence unit and the LIRA Security & Defence Centre. Their work addresses both technical challenges in AI development and sociocultural complexities of digital transformation in Asia-Pacific regions.
