Rolien Hoyng is a Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at Lancaster University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), affiliated with the Sociology Department. Her research focuses on digital infrastructures, data-centric technologies, and their socio-political implications in contexts like smart cities, ecological governance, and global waste management. Her work spans multi-sited studies in Turkey, Hong Kong, and Europe.
Recent contributions include co-editing Communication Innovation and Digital Technology: A Critique of the New in a Multipolar World (2022) and editing a special issue on Digital Infrastructure, Liminality, and World-Making via Asia (2021). She leads projects like Smart Ecology and Algorithmic Cultures (2023–2024), exploring intersections of environmental governance and data-driven systems.
Her research interests emphasize critical analyses of technology’s role in power dynamics, including fintech risk regimes, circular economies, and post-truth politics. She collaborates with initiatives like Lancaster’s Intelligent, Robotic and Autonomous Systems Centre (LIRA) and Security Lancaster (Sociology).
