Yanran Yao is a Lecturer in Chinese Politics and Political Economy at King’s College London’s Lau China Institute, part of the School of Global Affairs. She holds a PhD in Politics and Public Administration from the University of Hong Kong (2018). Prior to King’s, she served as a Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Master of Non-profit Management Program at the University of Hong Kong.
Her research focuses on civil society dynamics under authoritarianism, Chinese political economy, and public/nonprofit management. Notably, she examines accountability challenges in civil society organizations (CSOs) under authoritarian regimes like China and Hong Kong, analyzing how the Chinese Communist Party influences global agendas via domestic CSOs. Her work bridges theoretical political science with empirical studies on globalization and resource dependency.
Yanran teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including 'Business and Entrepreneurship in Contemporary China' and 'Doing Business in China.' She actively contributes to interdisciplinary initiatives such as the Lau China Institute’s co-creation project supporting Chinese students in the UK and participates in events discussing Chinese youth political engagement abroad.
Her publications address wildlife trade policy, NGO-government interactions, and nonprofit infrastructure in China, reflecting her expertise in linking domestic governance to international contexts.
