Dr. Yan Liu is an Associate Professor of the Practice in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) at Duke University, and Director of the Chinese Language Program. She holds a Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition from Carnegie Mellon University (2013). Her academic roles include directing language programs, coordinating curriculum development, and teaching Chinese courses tailored for heritage and non-heritage learners. Dr. Liu’s research focuses on Chinese language pedagogy, heritage language education, and the integration of service-learning and DEI principles into language instruction. She has developed innovative courses such as Chinese Translation and Interpretation and Understanding China and the U.S., and pioneered CLAC (Content and Language Integrated Learning) courses combining Chinese with global health, environmental studies, and public policy. Her work has been recognized with awards including the Betsy Alden Outstanding Service-Learning Award (2020).
Dr. Liu serves on the board of the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA), chairs special interest groups on heritage language learning and advanced-level content-based courses, and reviews for journals like Journal of Chinese as a Second Language Teaching. Her research spans L2 Chinese reading/writing, curriculum design, and assessment methodologies, with publications in applied linguistics and language education. She actively contributes to professional organizations, advocating for evidence-based language teaching practices.
Her courses emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, blending language skills with cultural, social, and policy topics. Current offerings include Voices in Global Health: Mandarin Tutorial and Chinese Sociolinguistics. Dr. Liu’s service-learning initiatives and pedagogical innovations reflect her commitment to equitable and community-engaged education.
