Dr. Shijuan Liu serves as Professor of Chinese in the Department of Language, Literature, and Writing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania's College of Arts, Humanities, Media, and Public Affairs. With over 25 years of experience teaching Chinese as a foreign/second language since 1995, she instructs Chinese language courses at all levels and develops English-language courses on Chinese literature, culture, film, and media.
Her educational background includes a BA in Chinese Language and Literature from Hebei Normal University (formerly Hebei Teachers College), an MA in Modern Chinese from Renmin University of China, and MS/PhD in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University Bloomington. Prior to joining IUP in 2011, she held faculty positions at Renmin University of China, California State University Los Angeles, and Northwestern University.
Liu is a nationally recognized leader in educational technology applications for language learning, having presented at institutions including Michigan State University and Penn State. Her research focuses on innovative language pedagogy, digital learning environments, and cross-cultural communication through Chinese language education. She has published extensively in journals such as Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education and The Internet and Higher Education.
Her professional honors include election to the Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA) Board of Directors (2018-2021) and the Cengage Learning Award for Innovative Excellence. She also serves as Column Editor for the Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching and co-chairs the International Conference of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching.

Liu actively contributes to campus life through founding the Chinese Language and Culture Club, organizing traditional Chinese festival celebrations, and securing grants including IUP's ACPAC Technology funds and collaborating on projects funded by China's National Science Foundation. Her leadership extends to the Chinese Language Teachers Association of Western Pennsylvania where she serves as an officer.
