JingJing Ji is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of Chinese Language and Culture at Northwestern University. She specializes in teaching Chinese language courses at all proficiency levels for heritage and non-heritage learners. Her pedagogical innovations have earned her recognition, including two Associated Student Government (ASG) Faculty Honor Roll nominations (2016-2017, 2019-2020) and the 2021-2022 CLTA Innovative Excellence Award. She also received the 2023 MAFLT LCTL Best Innovation Award for her technology-driven approach to fostering student interaction in novice-level Chinese classes.
JingJing holds an M.A. from East China Normal University and is a Ph.D. candidate in Literacy, Language, and Culture at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Her research focuses on Chinese Heritage Language (CHL) education, encompassing curriculum development, effective teaching methodologies, assessment strategies, and family language policies. She has published in journals like Foreign Language Annals and Journal of Technology and Chinese Language Teaching, and co-authored the textbook 传承中文: Modern Chinese for Heritage Beginners.
Active in academic service, she reviews proposals for the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and manuscripts for journals like Foreign Language Annals. Her work has also been featured in Times Higher Education and peer-reviewed journals addressing pandemic-era language instruction and DEI in education. A certified Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester via ACTFL, she has taught at institutions including Washington and Lee University, the University of Virginia (UVA), and summer programs like Middlebury College's Summer Chinese School.
