Gang Liu is a Teaching Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Department of Languages, Cultures & Applied Linguistics (LCAL) within Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He has held this position since 2010 and oversees the LCAL Chinese studies program. His teaching spans Chinese language courses at all proficiency levels and specialized content courses on topics such as Chinese business culture, classical poetry, mythology, and digital media.
Education includes a Ph.D. in Asian Languages and Literatures from the University of Michigan, two M.A. degrees (Comparative Literature from the University of Western Ontario and Classical Chinese Literature from Beijing Language and Culture University), and a B.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language. His research focuses on classical Chinese poetry, CFL pedagogy, and technology-enhanced learning, reflected in co-edited volumes on overseas Chinese culture teaching and his children’s book series on Chinese mythology.
He has received prestigious awards including the 2024 Elliott Dunlap Smith Award for Teaching Excellence and grants supporting research and faculty development. His service roles include coordinating ACTFL Chinese oral proficiency assessments, editing Studies in Chinese Learning and Teaching, and leading local and regional language education associations.
Liu’s interdisciplinary approach integrates digital tools and cultural studies, exemplified by courses like Chinese Mythology and Animation Creation and research on game-based cultural instruction for advanced learners. His work bridges traditional literary scholarship with contemporary language teaching methodologies.
