Jin Liu is an Associate Professor of Chinese in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Institute of Technology. She holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Literature and Culture from Cornell University (2008), and earlier degrees from Beijing University including an M.A. in Chinese Linguistics (2000) and B.A. in Chinese Language and Literature (1997). Her research focuses on contemporary Chinese popular culture through interdisciplinary lenses combining media studies, sociolinguistics, and cultural theory.
Dr. Liu's work examines language use in media productions such as film, music, and digital platforms, with particular attention to dialects and their socio-political implications. She authored Signifying the Local: Media Productions Rendered in Local Languages in Mainland China in the New Millennium (2013) and co-edited Chinese Under Globalization: Emerging Trends in Language Use in China (2012). Her recent projects include digital humanities initiatives analyzing Chinese script creativity and tonal patterns in rap music.

She currently serves on the board of the China Research Center and coordinates interdisciplinary initiatives like the Global Media Festival, bringing prominent cultural figures like filmmaker Wang Jiuliang to campus.
