Xuhong Shang is a Professor and School Director in the Department of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University (SIU), within the College of Art, Architecture, and Design. He holds an M.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and a B.A. in Painting from Shanghai Teachers University. His career spans roles in New York City, Southern Illinois, and Shanghai, with a focus on transcontinental multimedia art.
Shang has received prestigious awards, including the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts/Southern Art Federation Regional Visual Arts Fellowship (1995) and the Art Matter Fellowship (1993). His work explores themes of cultural duality, memory, and the interplay between reality and imagination, blending traditional Chinese aesthetics with contemporary minimalist techniques.
His art has been exhibited globally at venues like the Atlanta Contemporary, Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, and Shanghai Museum of Art. Key series include the Mountain Series (1993–present), Momentary Series (2007), and White Shadow (2019). Publications include catalog essays in Asian Art News, New American Paintings, and Reality/Representation (Plum Blossoms International).
Shang’s research emphasizes conceptual installations and cross-cultural dialogue, with works featured in galleries such as Richard Gray Gallery, Sotheby’s, and Hua Gallery. He contributes to academic discourse through writings on art theory and participates in international exhibitions, including the San Francisco Public Library Group Exhibition (2019) and Stanford University East Asian Library projects.
