Xueying Wang

Xueying Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters. Her research focuses on the intersection of Catholicism in China and Confucianism, particularly during the Chinese Rites Controversy of 1630–1742. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame, specializing in patristic theology, and has held prior academic positions at Loyola University Chicago and Valparaiso University.

Education: Ph.D. in Theology (University of Notre Dame, 2014); M.A. in Theology and Classics (University of Notre Dame, 2009); M.A. in English (Beijing University, 2007); B.A. in German (Beijing Foreign Studies University, 2003).

Research Interests: Wang examines Chinese Catholic intellectuals’ efforts to harmonize Confucian practices with Catholic doctrine, emphasizing ancestral rites, Confucian temple rituals, and theological terminology translation. Her book project, Chinese Literati on the Rites Controversy: A Comparative Theological Perspective, analyzes writings of figures like Yan Mo and Zhang Xingyao. She also explores comparative ethics, early Christian thought, and interfaith dialogue.

Publications and Awards: Her work has appeared in Journal of World Christianity, Journal of Chinese Religions, and edited volumes. She has received prestigious fellowships such as the Hank Fellowship and Henry Luce Summer Fellowship. Her teaching includes courses on Asian religions, global ethics, and Christian theology.
