David Clairmont is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His research focuses on comparative religious ethics, particularly the interplay between Roman Catholicism and Theravada Buddhist moral thought, methodological approaches in Catholic theology, and the relationship between ethics and spirituality. He explores topics such as intercultural dialogue in the Church, the history of Christian spirituality (especially Benedictine and Franciscan traditions), and moral formation.
Clairmont has authored Moral Struggle and Religious Ethics (2011) and co-edited American Religions and the Family (2007). His current projects include an introduction to comparative religious ethics with William Schweiker, the Encyclopedia of Religious Ethics, and books on Thomas Merton's religious ethics and theology/business ethics under the working title Love and Accounting.
His recent publications analyze metaethical frameworks in religious ethics, medieval theological perspectives on virtue, and comparative methodological approaches. No scientific awards are listed, but his work has been published in leading journals like the Journal of the American Academy of Religion and Journal of Religious Ethics. Clairmont collaborates on interdisciplinary projects, including co-editing major reference works in theology and ethics.
