Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., is an Associate Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. He holds a Ph.D. in Roman Catholic Moral Theology and Christian Ethics from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley. His research focuses on the intersection of moral theology and pastoral practice, applied Christian ethics, and end-of-life care ethics. He has served in senior administrative roles, including Vice President for Student Affairs at Notre Dame and President of the University of Portland.
Education: Ph.D., Graduate Theological Union (1990); M.Div., University of Notre Dame (1980); B.A., English, University of Illinois (1976).
Research interests include moral discernment in pastoral ministry, ethical issues in healthcare, and the mission of Catholic higher education. His publications address theological reflection methods in ministry education and the role of Catholic institutions in societal ethics.
Notable awards include the Rev. John Farley Award for Service (2010), Kaneb Teaching Award (1999), and multiple teaching recognitions from Notre Dame students. His leadership roles include service on boards of Catholic universities, hospitals, and ethics organizations.
Pastoral service includes residence life ministries at Notre Dame and the University of Portland. He continues to engage in theological education through teaching and advising in moral theology and ethics.
