Dr. Xuanzi Xu is a Lecturer in Digital Media within the Discipline of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. She holds a BA from Wuhan University, an MA from Paris-Sorbonne University, and a PhD from the University of Sydney (2020). Her research focuses on digital public spheres in China, the interplay between ICTs, civil society, and state governance, and the political implications of digital communication revolutions.
Key research interests include digital regulation, Chinese social media dynamics, and online news participation. She is the author of Online News-Prompted Public Spheres in China (2022), which develops a novel theory of online public spheres, and co-authored a 2024 analysis of YouTube discourse around the Wuhan lockdown. Xu is a member of the China Studies Centre and has published across academic journals like Javnost and Revue Economique et Sociale.
Her recent work examines algorithmic governance in China, including a 2025 chapter on regulating price discrimination on digital platforms. Xu’s publications reflect a trajectory from French media studies (2014) to contemporary digital governance challenges.
