Guobin Yang is the Grace Lee Boggs Professor of Communication and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, holding dual appointments in the Annenberg School for Communication and the Department of Sociology. He also serves as the Director of the Center on Digital Culture and Society, Deputy Director of the Center for the Study of Contemporary China, and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies at Annenberg. His academic leadership extends to roles in multiple interdisciplinary groups including the Graduate Group in History and the Lauder Institute.
Yang holds dual PhDs: one in English Literature (with specialization in Literary Translation) from Beijing Foreign Studies University, and another in Sociology from New York University. His research focuses on digital culture, Chinese internet dynamics, political communication, and social movements. He is renowned for works like The Power of the Internet in China: Citizen Activism Online (2009) and The Red Guard Generation and Political Activism in China (2016). His upcoming book Lockdown: The Story of the Coronavirus in Wuhan, China examines pandemic governance and societal responses under lockdown conditions.
Yang’s scholarly contributions include editing volumes on social media in China, media activism, and Chinese internet history. He has held prestigious fellowships and editorial roles in leading journals such as Global Media and Communication and Social Media + Society. His work bridges sociology, communication studies, and digital humanities, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding modern China’s social and technological transformations.
