Xizhen Qin is an Associate Professor of Chinese in the Department of World Languages Education at the University of South Florida. She holds a BA and MA in Chinese Linguistics from Shandong University, and a Ph.D. in Chinese Pedagogy from Ohio State University. Her expertise spans over a decade of teaching Chinese language and culture at all educational levels, with extensive experience in curriculum development for K-16 programs, teacher training, and study abroad initiatives.
Dr. Qin has served in key roles including instructor for the OSU Chinese Flagship Program (2006-2010) and the USF STARTALK Chinese Academy (2011-2015). She is certified as an ACTFL OPI interviewer and AP Chinese Reader. Her research emphasizes Chinese pedagogy innovations, intercultural communication dynamics, and cultural studies, particularly focusing on cross-cultural misunderstandings and pragmatic competence development.
Her scholarly work explores sociolinguistic patterns in address terms, vocabulary instruction models, and the impact of cultural context on language learning. Notable contributions include studies on classroom peer response mechanisms, internship-based cultural immersion, and historical analysis of Chinese sociolinguistic changes. She actively designs language assessment tools and curricula that bridge theoretical frameworks with practical language application.
