Xiushi Yang is a Professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University's College of Arts and Letters. His research focuses on migration, drug abuse, HIV/STD transmission, and gender health disparities, with extensive fieldwork in China. He has secured over $4 million in research funding from federal and other sources.

Research examines the intersection of migration, gender, and health risks, particularly how temporary migration patterns influence STD/HIV transmission and substance abuse. Recent work analyzes synthetic drug epidemics and the impact of childhood trauma on addiction patterns.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on public health interventions for vulnerable populations, especially female entertainment workers and rural-urban migrants in China. Recent articles explore community-based harm reduction strategies and socioeconomic determinants of drug abuse.
