Professor Xiaoyang Qi is a tenured Primary Faculty Member in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology-Oncology, at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He also holds Secondary Faculty Appointments in Pediatrics, Pathology, and Biomedical Engineering. His research focuses on developing SapC-DOPS nanovesicles for cancer-selective targeting and therapy, with applications in glioblastoma, pancreatic cancer, and neuroblastoma.
- B.Sc., Biochemistry, Nanjing University (1982)
- Ph.D., Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Oklahoma State University (1992)
His work on SapC-DOPS nanovesicles has demonstrated tumor-specific targeting, non-toxic delivery of imaging agents, and induction of apoptosis via mitochondrial activation. These nanovesicles bind phosphatidylserine (PS) on tumor cells, enabling theranostic applications across multiple cancers.
Recent publications highlight SapC-DOPS in
- Brain tumor imaging with MRI contrast agents (2015)
- Pediatric cancer biotherapeutics (2016)
- Combination radiotherapy for enhanced efficacy (2019)
Scientific honors include
- Tri-State Outstanding Biotech Innovation Award (2008)
- Marquis Who's Who in America (2011)
- AcademicKeys Who's Who in Medicine Higher Education (2004, 2005, 2012)
- NIH R44 Grant Recipient (2011-2016)
As Director of the Brain Tumor Modeling Program (2017-present) and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board at Bexion Pharmaceuticals (2006-present), he bridges academic research with clinical translation. Current projects include systemic enzyme delivery for Gaucher disease (2025 Federal Grant) and co-targeting kinases in PTEN-deficient glioblastoma (2019 Federal Grant).
