Tullio Florio is a Full Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (DIMI) at the University of Genoa, where he serves as Course Coordinator for the Biotechnology Course Council and holds membership on both the Department Board and the Technical-Scientific Committee of the University's Strategic Center Security, Risk and Vulnerability Center. His academic base is the former Institute of Pharmacology at Viale Benedetto XV 2.
His research centers on pharmacological oncology with emphasis on brain tumor therapeutics, particularly glioblastoma and neuroblastoma. Key focus areas include developing biomimetic nanovesicle delivery systems for boron neutron capture therapy, investigating ion channel mechanisms in drug resistance (notably CLIC1's role in metformin response), and optimizing tumor treating fields through electrical membrane property modulation. This work bridges neuropharmacology, nanomedicine, and clinical toxicology to address treatment-resistant cancers.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal a cohesive research trajectory in targeted brain tumor therapy, characterized by innovative nanocarrier strategies and mechanistic studies of drug resistance. The work consistently integrates pharmacological principles with nanotechnology and molecular oncology, demonstrating translational approaches for improving boron delivery, overcoming treatment barriers, and repurposing existing drugs like metformin for glioblastoma therapy.
