Xiaoli Yin is an Associate Professor at the Narendra Paul Loomba Department of Management within the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College, City University of New York. With over two decades of academic experience, she teaches Business Policy courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including honors sections. Her academic journey began with a BA in English from Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1993, followed by an MA in Sociology from Northwestern University in 1995, and culminated with a PhD in Organization Behavior/Sociology from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 2000.
Dr. Yin's research focuses on strategic management, organizational behavior, and international business, with particular expertise in inter-firm collaborations (including strategic alliances and mergers and acquisitions), alternative governance structures (especially franchising), and social networks. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks from sociology and strategic management to examine how organizational structures, networks, and identities influence strategic decisions and performance outcomes. She has developed a distinctive research program examining how social networks, institutional contexts, and identity dynamics shape organizational strategies in both domestic and international settings.
Her recent publications reveal a clear trajectory from traditional organizational studies toward more nuanced examinations of identity, gender, and social movements in strategic contexts. While maintaining her foundational work on franchising and strategic alliances, she has increasingly incorporated contemporary social phenomena like the #MeToo movement into her research on corporate governance and acquisitions. Her work spans multiple prestigious journals including Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, and Organization Science.
