Xianping Dong is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine. He leads the Dong Lab, focusing on lysosomal ion channels and transporters in health and disease. His research bridges basic science and clinical applications, addressing lysosomal storage diseases, neurodegeneration, cancer, and muscle disorders.
Education: BA/BSc (Anhui University), MA/MSc (Hefei University of Technology), PhD (University of Science and Technology of China), Postdoctoral Fellow (University of Michigan).
Research interests include endolysosomal ion channels, calcium signaling, autophagy regulation, and their roles in diseases. Techniques include electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and mouse genetics. Major contributions include uncovering TRPML1's role in iron homeostasis and mTORC1 feedback loops.
Awards include the DMRF Excellence Award, CIHR New Investigator Award, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Presidential Award.
Lab status: Currently closed due to a 2023 flood, expected to reopen in 2025. Active collaborations include studies on lysosomal storage diseases, bacterial clearance mechanisms, and cancer biology.
