Xiang Xu is an Assistant Professor of Dance at Temple University's Boyer College of Music and Dance, where he joined in 2022. An internationally recognized choreographer and dancer, he holds an MFA from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and a BFA from Beijing Dance Academy. His work investigates the fusion of traditional Asian movement aesthetics with contemporary dance, treating dance as a 'physical form of philosophy.'
Xu's research focuses on cultural intersections in dance, particularly Chinese classical techniques and their modern reinterpretations. His publications analyze historical practices like foot-binding and 'Tilting' style, contributing to dance anthropology and cultural studies.
He founded Xiang Xu Dance and has collaborated with institutions globally, including the Merce Cunningham Trust, Cambodian National Arts Center, and Joffrey Ballet. His choreographic residencies span Palestine, Chicago, and New York, with works like Monkey Mind (2022) and Vessels Bearing (2019).
