Xi Wang is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies (ENVS) and the Institute for Energy Studies (IES) at Western Washington University (WWU). Their research focuses on energy and climate governance, particularly in energy system transitions and decarbonization, intersecting energy policy with critical social science frameworks. They lead a collaborative project analyzing U.S. state and municipal policymakers' engagement with building energy efficiency policies, and a second project examining climate change impacts in the Salish Sea region, including Indigenous community-based housing solutions and long-term climate modeling.
Education: PhD in Geography from University of Colorado-Boulder, MS in Environmental Studies (CU Boulder), BA in English Literature from Cornell University.
Research emphasizes creative interventions in climate communication through art and storytelling, aiming to democratize climate knowledge. They serve as a Union Steward for the United Faculty of Western Washington and previously held roles on labor rights boards at CU Boulder and Boulder Cooperative Food. Currently advise on equity issues for Puget Sound Energy’s clean energy transition and participate in community organizing for environmental justice.
Teaching includes courses on climate governance, environmental justice, and energy policy. Notable collaborations include work with Swinomish Indian Tribal Community on climate-resilient housing and GIS-based climate modeling with WWU faculty.
