Holmes Hummel

Holmes Hummel serves as Lecturer in the Atmosphere and Energy department and Managing Director of Energy Equity & Just Transitions at Stanford's Precourt Institute for Energy. They are also the founding Resident Fellow of Explore Energy House and member of multiple climate justice initiatives at Stanford.

Holmes Hummel earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University's Emmett Interdisciplinary Program in Environment and Resources (2006), along with an M.S. in Engineering (1999) and B.S. in Energy Engineering (1999), all from Stanford.

Dr. Hummel's research focuses on the intersections of energy policy, technology, and finance, with special emphasis on energy equity and just transitions. Their work integrates concepts of racial equity into energy systems and develops inclusive financial solutions for clean energy adoption. They examine how to bridge clean energy divides for underserved communities through innovative policy and financing mechanisms.

Dr. Hummel's publications analyze global energy scenarios and emission pathways, with particular attention to how policy interventions affect technology adoption and demographic factors. Their research reveals underappreciated potential for energy efficiency improvements while highlighting challenges in energy supply innovations needed for climate stabilization.

As an educator, Dr. Hummel has co-founded multiple innovative courses at Stanford including "Racial Equity in Energy" and "Quest for an Inclusive Clean Energy Economy." They serve as advisor to the Explore Energy program and collaborate on the CLEAR Decarbonization project through Stanford's Sustainability Accelerator.

Dr. Hummel co-directs Clean Energy Works, a public interest organization developing inclusive financial solutions for clean energy adoption, and previously served as Senior Policy Advisor in the Department of Energy's Office of Policy & International Affairs during 2009-2013.
