John P. Weyant is a Research Professor of Management Science and Engineering and Energy Science & Engineering at Stanford University, and a Senior Fellow at the Precourt Institute for Energy. He holds affiliated roles with the Stanford School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences, Woods Institute for the Environment, and Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies. His research integrates multi-region human-earth systems modeling, climate policy analysis, and energy technology assessment to inform global decarbonization strategies.
His research focuses on accelerating the use of systems models for energy, climate change, and sustainable development policy. Key interests include:
- Strategic planning for emerging technologies and market design
- Multi-sector coupled human-earth systems dynamics
- Global change systems analysis under uncertainty
- Decision support for government and private-sector stakeholders
Recent publications emphasize net-zero emissions pathways, policy impacts of climate legislation (e.g., Inflation Reduction Act), equity implications of decarbonization, and integrated assessment modeling innovations. Thematic analysis reveals strong focus on: multi-model comparative studies, energy system transitions, carbon pricing mechanisms, and cross-sectoral policy design.
Scientific Awards:
- Nobel Peace Prize (Contributor, IPCC, 2007)
- Adelman-Frankel Award for Energy Economics (2008)
- Outstanding Lifetime Contributions Award (IAEE, 2017)
- Life Time Achievement Award (IAMC, 2018)
He directs Stanford's Energy Modeling Forum (EMF) and chairs the global Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC), coordinating 60+ institutions. As lead advisor for doctoral and master's students, he mentors research in energy systems modeling and climate policy. His advisory roles include the UN, U.S. Department of Energy, EPA, and California regulatory agencies.
