Chris Field is the Perry L. McCarty Director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment and holds the Melvin and Joan Lane Professorship in Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies. He is also a Professor of Earth System Science and Biology at Stanford University, with dual affiliations in the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences and the School of Humanities & Sciences.
- Formerly founding director of Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology (2002-2016)
- Co-chair of IPCC Working Group II (2008-2015)
- Senior Fellow at Woods and Precourt Institutes
His research spans climate change mitigation and adaptation, focusing on coastal flooding risk reduction, wildfire management, and global carbon cycle dynamics. He combines field experiments, AI modeling, and policy analysis to address environmental risks. Recent work emphasizes nature-based solutions and their intersections with economic sustainability.
Key scientific recognitions include:
- Election to US National Academy of Sciences
- Max Planck Research Award
- Roger Revelle Medal
- Fellowships in AAAS, AGU, and ESA
He advises PhD students like Anela Arifi (bioenergy decarbonization) and Yi-Lin Tsai (AI for disaster resilience). The Global Ecology and Climate Solutions Lab under his leadership explores:
- Fundamental ecosystem processes (biogeochemical cycling, energy flows)
- Climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration
- Environmental risk quantification using AI
