Dr. Wubiao Zhou (Joseph) is an Associate Professor of Small Business and Entrepreneurship in the Department of Management at Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He has previously held academic positions at Newcastle University Business School, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Nanyang Technological University, reflecting a strong international academic profile.

Wubiao Zhou’s research focuses on Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Economic and Organizational Sociology, Social Networks, and Social Capital, with a geographical focus on emerging and transition economies, particularly China. Using quantitative and analytical methods, his work explores how formal and informal institutions—including political systems, regulatory environments, and kinship networks—influence entrepreneurial behavior and firm performance. His research also investigates political connections, property rights, and corporate networks within Chinese state capitalism.
His recent publications appear in top journals such as Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Small Business Economics, and World Development.
