Dr. Wizdom Powell is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Health Behavior at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina. Her work focuses on addressing health inequities among boys and men of color, particularly African American men, by examining the intersection of race, masculinity, health beliefs, and socioenvironmental factors. She is nationally recognized for her research on the 'gender paradox' and the psychosocial determinants of mental and physical health disparities.
Education: PhD in Clinical Psychology (2005) and MPH in Health Behavior (2003), both from the University of Michigan. Awards include the Hettleman Prize (2015) and APA Division 51’s Distinguished Professional Service Award (2014). She has served as a White House Fellow under President Obama, advising on military mental health policies, and directed the Health Disparities Institute at the University of Connecticut.
Her research explores racial discrimination, medical mistrust, and masculinity barriers to healthcare access. Key publications include chapters in the APA Handbook of Men and Masculinities (2015) and peer-reviewed articles on racial identity, forgiveness, and depressive symptomatology. She mentors doctoral and master’s students in public health and psychology.
