Dr Winnie Bedigen is a Lecturer in International Development at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the School of Politics and International Studies. Her research focuses on peacebuilding, gender, indigenous knowledge systems, and youth in conflict-affected regions of South Sudan, Uganda, and the Horn of Africa. Prior to joining Leeds in 2017, she held a part-time Lecturer position at Leeds Beckett University and completed her PhD there in 2017.
Her doctoral research examined Nilotic Lwo indigenous peacebuilding methods in South Sudan, emphasizing their applicability to national conflict resolution. Current research includes community peacebuilding projects in South Sudan's Magwi County, Juba, and Uganda's Northern regions (Agago, Amuru, Gulu, etc.), particularly the Prison-Community Reintegration initiative. She also investigates development challenges like justice, rights, WaSH (water, sanitation, hygiene), and participatory approaches with NGOs and Community-Based Organizations.
Teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with supervision of three PhD students: Vivian Nsiah (gender and water governance in Ghana), Patricia Tshomba (urban agriculture and women’s agency in DRC), and Mohamed Abdi (hybrid peacebuilding in Somalia). Her work integrates Afrocentric and cultural theoretical frameworks, advocating for local agency and resource mobilization in conflict and development contexts.
