Professor Bill Murphy is a Professor of Engineering Geology at the University of Leeds, part of the School of Earth and Environment within the Faculty of Environment. He serves as Faculty Pro Dean for Internationalisation. With nearly 30 years of experience, his expertise spans engineering geology, geohazards, and rock slope engineering. His research focuses on geological processes impacting ground performance, including landslides, earthquakes, and seismic effects on infrastructure.
He holds a BSc from the University of Strathclyde and a PhD from University College London. Professional recognitions include Fellowship of the Geological Society and Chartered Geologist status. He has contributed to major projects like the Queensferry Crossing and Hinkley Point C as a consultant for firms such as Arup and Halcrow.
Research interests include 4D geophysical monitoring of landslides, seismically-induced hazards, and geological disposal of radioactive waste. He co-authored the CIRIA Guide to Rock Netting and is working on guidelines for natural slope management. Teaching contributions include modules on geological hazards for MSc students and engineering geology for undergraduates.
He has served on the Geotechnique Advisory Panel and the Editorial Board of Engineering Geology. His research groups include the Institute of Applied Geoscience and Petrophysics and Geomechanics. Current projects explore hydromechanical processes in fractured rock and geological hazards in Chile.
