Sergio Sepulveda serves as Professor and FRBC Chair in Resource Geoscience & Geotechnics within Simon Fraser University's Department of Earth Sciences, conducting critical research on geological hazards impacting infrastructure and communities.
His academic foundation includes:
- BSc. from Universidad de Chile (1999)
- MSc. from University of California, Berkeley (2001)
- Ph.D. from University of Leeds (2004)
Research centers on engineering geology applications for geohazard assessment in mountainous regions, specializing in rock slope stability analysis, coseismic landslide mechanisms, and debris flow dynamics within Cordilleran settings. His methodology integrates intensive fieldwork, laboratory testing, remote sensing (InSAR/LiDAR), and numerical modeling to evaluate risks to critical infrastructure from natural and engineered slopes.
He leads the Engineering Geology and Geotechnics Research Group focused on resource industry applications, with three major active projects: rock slope failure mechanisms in natural/artificial slopes; coseismic landslide hazards in deglaciated landscapes; and catastrophic rockslide-debris flow systems in British Columbia/Patagonia examining paraglacial conditions and atmospheric river impacts.
