Professor William Wood holds dual roles as Professor of Philosophical Theology in the Faculty of Theology and Religion and as the Clifford Potter Fellow and Tutor in Theology at Oriel College, University of Oxford. His research bridges analytic theology, medieval thought (especially Anselm and Aquinas), and the philosophical analysis of sin and self-deception. He has authored influential books such as Analytic Theology and the Academic Study of Religion (2021) and Blaise Pascal on Duplicity, Sin, and the Fall (2013).
Wood earned his PhD in theology from the University of Chicago and served as a postdoctoral fellow in philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. His work interrogates theology's place in modern academia, the theological implications of divine truth, and Pascal's exploration of human duplicity. He previously chaired Oxford’s Theology and Religion Faculty Board (2020–2024).
His research themes coalesce around three pillars: (1) the intersection of analytic theology with broader religious studies, (2) medieval theological frameworks (e.g., Anselm’s angelology, Aquinas’ metaphysics of truth), and (3) the Augustinian tradition’s treatment of sin as self-deception. Recent publications engage with Schubert Ogden’s theological legacy and contemporary debates on free will in philosophical theology.
