Professor Rik Van Nieuwenhove is a faculty member at Durham University, serving as Professor of Medieval Thought in the Department of Theology and Religion. He is also a member of the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies and the Centre for Catholic Studies. His research focuses on medieval theology, particularly Thomas Aquinas and the theology of the Trinity, as well as the spirituality of the Low Countries with an emphasis on Jan van Ruusbroec.
His scholarly work includes publications such as Introduction to Medieval Theology (2022), Thomas Aquinas and Contemplation (2021), and Trinity, regiratio and mind (2022), which explore themes like sacramental theology, eucharistic sacrifice, and the intersection of Neoplatonism with medieval mystical thought. His recent journal articles in New Blackfriars, International Journal of Systematic Theology, and Medieval Mystical Theology reflect a consistent engagement with Aquinas, Ruusbroec, and systematic theological frameworks.
