William Wilkinson is a veterinary surgeon (MRCVS) who teaches part-time at the University of Surrey while maintaining active veterinary practice. He serves on the RCVS Council, bringing his dual perspective as both an educator and practicing veterinarian to regulatory matters.
His educational background includes a BSc (Hons) in Bioveterinary Science from Liverpool University (2008-2011), followed by an accelerated veterinary medicine degree (BVetMed) from the Royal Veterinary College (2011-2015). He later earned a Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (GCLT) and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
Wilkinson's professional interests span veterinary medicine with particular focus on conservation and sustainability topics. His practical experience includes small animal practice (both independent and corporate settings), sheep farming (Lleyn and Jacob breeds until 2022), hen keeping, and currently studying veterinary aquaculture. He also runs a small beekeeping business and serves as an Army Reserve Veterinary Officer.
He maintains numerous professional memberships including RCVS, VDS, WAVMA, GWCT, BFA, BBKA, and VCF, reflecting his diverse interests across veterinary practice, wildlife conservation, and agricultural fields.
As an educator, Wilkinson developed and taught conservation and sustainability materials for the Wildlife and Conservation BSc program at Merrist Wood in 2021. His teaching philosophy appears grounded in practical experience, as indicated by his self-deprecating comment 'if you can't do, teach?'
Outside of veterinary work, he volunteers as a sailing instructor and paddlesport coach, and identifies as a committed Christian. His leadership experience extends to serving on his church's PCC (Parochial Church Council), which he describes as 'effectively board of trustees'.
