William Tsai is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Psychology at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. He is affiliated with the Clinical/Counseling Psychology PhD program, Human Development Research and Policy program, and the interdisciplinary Applied Psychology program. His roles include teaching, research leadership, and editorial board memberships for journals like Asian American Journal of Psychology and Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology.
Dr. Tsai holds a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA. His research integrates cultural, health, and clinical psychology to address cancer survivorship disparities among ethnic minorities, emotion regulation across cultures, and racial-ethnic socialization. Notable contributions include culturally adapted interventions for Chinese American breast cancer survivors and studies on pandemic mental health impacts.
His research trends emphasize culturally informed interventions, racial discrimination effects on mental health, and cross-cultural comparisons in emotion regulation. Recent studies explore generational differences in Vietnamese American adolescents and the role of social support in stress mediation.
