Hyung Chol (Brandon) Yoo is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the School of Social and Family Dynamics (Family and Human Development) and the School of Social Transformation (Asian Pacific American Studies) at Arizona State University. His research focuses on racialized risk and resilience in Asian American youth and families, including topics like critical consciousness, racism, model minority myth internalization, and ethnic socialization. He teaches courses on Asian American mental health, cultural psychology, and race and child development.
Education: Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Minnesota.
Research interests include racial identity development, racial socialization strategies, and the psychological impact of racial stereotypes and discrimination. His work emphasizes the intersection of race, culture, and mental health, with a focus on marginalized communities.
Service and Leadership: Member of multiple editorial boards, including Cultural Diversity and Ethnic Minority Psychology, and active in diversity initiatives across ASU and national organizations like the American Psychological Association. He has advised numerous student researchers and contributed to policy discussions on anti-racist practices in education and healthcare.
Key contributions include validating measures like the Model Minority Myth internalization scale and the Multiracial Experiences Measure, as well as co-editing influential chapters on Asian American parental socialization and racial identity.
