- Education: MFA in Studio Art, University of South Carolina (1980).
Dooley’s research focuses on the interplay of compression and concentration in painting and drawing, exploring how small-scale artworks exert visual assertiveness. As SMGA director, he curates exhibitions featuring internationally recognized artists like Jasper Johns and Carrie Mae Weems, while managing a permanent collection of 1,000 modern and contemporary art pieces. His teaching integrates curatorial practices through collaborations with Auburn University’s Rural Studio, an architectural outreach program in Hale County, Alabama.
Awards:
- Merit Award, 45th Annual Bi-State Art Competition (2019)
Dooley’s artistic practice has been showcased in over 50 regional and national juried exhibitions, including solo shows at the Friends Gallery (2022) and PaperWorkers Local (2014). His works often employ vibrant layers of oil pastel, ink, and paint to interrogate spatial tensions between foreground and background.
