Dr. William Small is a Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University and Research Scientist at the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS. He holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of British Columbia and completed postdoctoral training at UBC and the University of New South Wales. His research employs ethno-spatial epidemiological methods to study how social, structural, and physical environments impact HIV risk behaviors and treatment outcomes among illicit drug users.
Research interests focus on harm reduction strategies, HIV prevention, and the intersections of environment and health behaviors. His work integrates ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and geo-spatial mapping with three longitudinal cohort studies: At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS), Vancouver Injection Drug User Study (VIDUS), and AIDS Care Cohort to Evaluate Access to Survival Services (ACCESS).
Awards include the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Career Investigator Scholar Award. His interdisciplinary approach bridges public health, epidemiology, and social sciences to address complex health challenges in vulnerable populations.
