Sarah Larney is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine at the University of Montreal. She also holds the position of Deputy Principal Investigator at the National Centre for Drug and Alcohol Research, University of New South Wales. Her work focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of drug-related harms, including hepatitis C infection, injection-related injuries, excess mortality, and criminal justice system contact.
Current projects include:
- Rapid assessment of the effects of COVID-19 on people who inject drugs
- Rapid systematic review of the impacts of Big Events (natural disasters, economic recessions, pandemics) on drug use and harm reduction services
- Longitudinal analysis of mortality patterns in the Hepco cohort study, with emphasis on unstable housing as a mortality determinant
Her recent publications highlight trends in:
- Injection drug use epidemiology
- Hepatitis B/C and syphilis risks among PWID
- Psychological distress during pandemics
- Mortality risks associated with opioid agonist treatment and comorbidities
- Post-incarceration health outcomes
Sarah Larney's research integrates public health, epidemiology, and social determinants of health to address critical gaps in drug-related harm prevention and aging populations of substance users.
