Dr. Pedro Mateu-Gelabert is a Professor in the Department of Community Health and Social Sciences at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy. With over 25 years of research experience, his work focuses on drug use epidemiology, HIV/HCV prevention, and structural barriers to healthcare access, particularly among marginalized populations. He leads NIH-funded projects addressing HCV care access for people who inject drugs (PWID) and opioid-related risks among youth.
Education: PhD in Sociology from New York University (NYU) and BA in Sociology from Universidad Complutense de Madrid. His research spans international collaborations in Colombia, Spain, Ukraine, and Russia, examining HIV/HCV transmission dynamics and harm reduction strategies.
Research interests include opioid epidemics, injection drug use in Latin America, and the intersection of criminal justice systems with public health. He has pioneered interventions such as the 'Accessible Care Model' for co-located HCV treatment in syringe service programs and developed mobile harm reduction tools like the 'E-staying safe' app.
Key contributions include analyzing overdose risk factors, stigma against drug users, and the impact of adverse childhood experiences on substance use trajectories. His work emphasizes community-based approaches and systemic solutions to address health inequities.
