William P. Umphres is a Professor of Political Theory at the University of Cincinnati, specializing in democratic deliberation norms, inclusion in political institutions, and the intersection of religion with governance. His work examines how democratic processes can produce equitable outcomes while respecting diverse viewpoints. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, where his dissertation explored the legitimacy of religious reasoning in political discourse.
Dr. Umphres teaches courses on Political Thought, Constitutional Law, and Courts & Judicial Politics, emphasizing critical engagement with foundational concepts like freedom, equality, and separation of powers. His research bridges theoretical frameworks with American political realities, addressing issues such as racial/gender inequality, mass incarceration, and healthcare access.
Recent research focuses on a systems-based analysis of deliberation, advocating for silence and listening among privileged groups to foster inclusivity. He serves as Principal Investigator (PI) on two grants from the American Association of Colleges and Universities: a TRHT-Focused Campus Climate Assessment Toolkit (2022-2023) and a beta-testing initiative (2023-2024).
