Bruce Williams is the Ambassador Henry J. Taylor Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Media Studies at the University of Virginia’s School of Arts & Sciences. He teaches courses such as MDST 3404: Politics and New Media and MDST 4000: Media Theory and Methods, and is an active member of the Graduate Faculty.
His research explores the intersection of media and democratic politics, with a focus on how evolving media landscapes influence citizenship, public discourse, and perceptions of military and racial justice in the United States. He investigates how popular media portrayals shape public understanding of the criminal justice system and contribute to racial tensions.
His recent scholarly work reflects a strong trend in political communication, media theory, and democratic engagement, particularly examining the transition from broadcast to digital media environments and its implications for public deliberation and civic life.

Williams has secured research funding from the National Science Foundation and the Cultures of Consumption Research Programme at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is currently launching a new research project on media’s influence on public understanding of American military force abroad.
