Molly Scudder is an Associate Professor in the School of Political Science at Purdue University, where she joined the faculty in 2016 and was promoted to her current rank in Spring 2022. Her scholarship centers on democratizing political discourse through innovative theoretical frameworks.
Her educational foundation includes a Ph.D. and M.A. in Government from the University of Virginia and a B.S. in Political Science and French from Santa Clara University. Scudder's research fundamentally challenges established paradigms in deliberative democracy by positioning listening—not empathy—as the cornerstone of inclusive democratic processes. She pioneered the Listening Quality Index (LQI), a groundbreaking instrument for empirically measuring listening behaviors in face-to-face deliberation, addressing a critical methodological gap in the field.
Scudder's theoretical contributions have reshaped empirical approaches in deliberative studies, generating significant scholarly impact through one authored book and five refereed journal articles. She received the Antonia Syson Cornerstone Teaching Award in 2021 for her exceptional pedagogy in both the Political Science department and Purdue's Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts program, where she cultivates student engagement in dynamic political practice.
Her commitment to democratic inclusion extends beyond academia through active knowledge translation to public audiences, advancing practical understanding of democratic participation.
