William Nash is a Professor of American Studies and English at Middlebury College, where he has taught since 1995. He holds a B.A. from Centre College of Kentucky and M.A./Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research focuses on historical and contemporary representations of abolitionism and enslavement, as well as Black literature and culture. He is the author of Charles Johnson’s Fiction and co-editor of Charles Johnson: The Novelist as Philosopher, and has published in journals like African American Review and Callaloo. He has received three NEH grants.
Teaching specialties include African American literature, country music’s cultural work, music and social power, and re-presentations of slavery. Courses like Re-Presenting Slavery and Imagining Rural America reflect his interdisciplinary approach. He also advises senior theses and independent studies across American Studies, Black Studies, and English.
His scholarship bridges literary analysis with historical context, emphasizing how creative works engage with race, class, and power. Recent research explores the intersection of music (e.g., Johnny Cash’s legacy) and sociopolitical movements.
