Mary Caton Lingold is an Associate Professor of English and Director of the PhD Program in Media, Art, and Text (MATX) at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her interdisciplinary work bridges African Atlantic world studies, sound studies, and digital humanities, with a focus on music’s role in histories of slavery and Black cultural resilience.
- Education: PhD in English from Duke University (2017), MA from University of Colorado Boulder, BA from Trinity University
Her research explores Caribbean cultural legacies, transatlantic slavery, and sonic archives. Key projects include the book African Musicians in the Atlantic World (2023), co-edited volume Digital Sound Studies (2018), and the Musical Passage digital project. She has also produced a podcast on Tena, an enslaved woman’s song, and guest-edited a Reviews in DH special issue on sound.
Her academic journey reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary methods and public-facing scholarship, shaped by her upbringing in the rural U.S. South and her dual training in music performance and literary studies.
