Benjamin Fagan is an Associate Professor of English at Auburn University's College of Liberal Arts. He specializes in African American literature and culture, with a focus on Black newspapers, Frederick Douglass, and antebellum literary movements. His research has been supported by prestigious fellowships from institutions like the NEH and the American Antiquarian Society.
Education: Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia (2007), B.A. in English from the University of Iowa.
Research interests include Black press history, transnationalism in African American literature, and the intersection of journalism and abolitionism. Recent publications explore the role of newspapers in Black organizing and the legacy of Frederick Douglass.
Notable awards include fellowships from the Beinecke Library, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and the Carter G. Woodson Institute. He is currently completing a book on Black organizing and Douglass’s newspapers.
