Charles I. Nero is a Professor of Rhetoric, Film, and Screen Studies and Africana at Bates College. His scholarship bridges communication studies, film and literary criticism, African American studies, and cultural studies, with a focus on black queer identity and its intersections with race, gender, and religion in media and literature.

Nero’s research explores black queer aesthetics, African American film, and the rhetorical dimensions of race and sexuality. His work has appeared in journals such as Callaloo, Public Culture, and Camera Obscura, and in anthologies like Black Queer Studies and Migrating the Black Body. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Ford Foundation.
Recent publications analyze topics such as disability in Black Panther, queer diasporic cinema, and the legacy of Black gay writers. His awards include the Rockefeller Residency Fellowship and NEH support for research at the Schomburg Center. Nero also organizes academic events and serves on committees addressing diversity and inclusion.
